What are the best places to visit in Turkestan?
After arriving in Turkestan, start with Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, continue to Hilvet Underground Mosque, and add Karavan Saray to your city route.
Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi
The main symbol of Turkestan is this 14th-century mausoleum, built on the orders of Timur and inscribed on the UNESCO list. There are almost no tourists before 10:00, and the light is at its best.
Hilvet Underground Mosque
A semi-underground Sufi structure about 120 meters south of the mausoleum. Tradition holds that Khoja Ahmed Yasawi descended here at the age of 63 and spent his last years below ground. Inside are several rooms: for prayer, for rituals, and for pilgrims staying overnight. In the early 1940s the building was taken apart for its bricks, and only the oldest section survived.
Karavan Saray
A modern tourist complex in the buffer zone of the Azret Sultan reserve, opened in 2021. It is built in the spirit of a medieval caravanserai, with rows of shops, an eastern bazaar, an amphitheater with a horse show, the Altyn Samruk flying theater, cafes, and hotels. A water channel links all of it together. Entry to the grounds is free; rides and shows are paid separately.
